Our Mission

Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. (Mark 16:15)

Our Belief

《The Apostles’ Creed》

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

History

In the 60’s, as more and more Chinese immigrate to Vancouver and there were not many existing Chinese churches, Rev. S. K Chiu recognized the urgent need of the gospel and founded the Vancouver Bread of Life Church in Chinatown in 1968. He had to leave a few years later; the church lost its spiritual leader; and was unsuccessful in re-establishing even after three attempts.

In 1993, Dr. Peter Chow, together with several members who shared the same burden, hired Rev. Sidney Ho as the pastor in charge of reviving the congregation, and in June of the same year, rented the basement of the Westside Baptist Church to resume Sunday worship services.

By God’s grace, as members increase, the basement was not large enough to accommodate the growth and the search for larger premises led to renting the smaller sanctuary of the Finnish Church located at 1920 Argyle Street. Although the church faced many trials and tribulations in the next 28 years, it overcame each and every obstacle by God’s grace.

Rev. Ho retired in 2012 and was replaced by Pastor Richard Chan.

Since there were limitations to developing ministries out of the rented space, in 2014 we purchased a commercial unit in the neighbourhood to set up an office for outreach to the community with the gospel.

Pastor Chan left in 2016 and Rev. Paul Leung pastored the church on a volunteer basis. In 2019, Pastor Stephen Lam came and joined the Board of Deacons to serve the congregation on a volunteer basis, but in 2021, Rev. Paul Leung had to resign to take care of his wife who is ill.

As we look to the future we know that although difficulties may abound, we believe that “God’s word is not chained” (2 Timothy 2:9). As long as we are united, God’s grace is sufficient to lead us to shine His light in the community. All glory to Him. Amen.
